CAR BUYING · CHECKLIST

The used-car checklist: what to look at before you buy

A little preparation can help you ask better questions, spot red flags, and avoid rushing into a big purchase.

Quick reminder

This guide is general information, not a mechanical inspection. Consider an independent pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic.

1. Check the paperwork first

2. Walk around the vehicle in daylight

3. Take a thoughtful test drive

Drive on a safe mix of roads if permitted. Pay attention to warning lights, braking, steering, unusual sounds, vibration, and transmission behaviour. Never ignore a warning light just because the car seems to drive normally.

4. Estimate the full cost

Look beyond the asking price. Budget for taxes and fees, fuel or charging, maintenance, tires, parking, financing, and insurance. Before committing, request insurance information for the exact vehicle and intended use.

5. Get an independent inspection

A qualified mechanic may identify problems that are not obvious during a short test drive. Agree on inspection arrangements before making a non-refundable commitment, and read any purchase conditions carefully.

Before you decide

Take your time. Compare similar vehicles, keep written notes, and walk away if the seller pressures you or refuses reasonable checks.
